Free is a pricing model, not a security verdict
A free VPN can be a limited tier funded by paid subscriptions, an advertising-supported product or another business model. Those differences matter more than the word “free.” Likewise, a paid subscription can fund a service without proving that its privacy claims, implementation or performance are sound.
Start by reading the provider’s policies and describing what you need the VPN to do. The tunnel changes the route and adds encryption to covered traffic between your device and the VPN server. It does not make signed-in browsing anonymous or replace HTTPS. Our VPN basics guide explains those limits.
This page does not independently test or rank free VPN services. It offers a way to assess a free plan against a paid subscription and avoids claiming that all free products behave alike.
Common limitations to check
| Item | Question to answer before installing |
|---|---|
| Data or time allowance | Is there a cap, reset interval or trial expiry? |
| Server choice | Can you choose a location or does the app assign one? |
| Simultaneous devices | Does the allowance cover the devices you intend to use? |
| Routing and protection | Are the settings you need available on your OS? |
| Supported activities | Does the plan permit your intended use under its terms? |
| Upgrade and renewal | Is it free indefinitely, a trial, or an automatically renewing offer? |
Do not assume every free plan has a data cap or that every paid plan allows unlimited devices. For example, Proton VPN publishes a free tier with its own stated conditions; it should be assessed using that provider’s current page rather than a blanket claim about all free VPNs. We have not tested that service here.
A free plan and a free trial are different
A free tier can remain usable with limitations. A free trial ends or changes after a stated period and may require payment information. A paid plan with a money-back guarantee collects payment first and may refund an eligible purchase only after a request.
Those distinctions affect both the bill and what you need to do next. Do not treat a “30-day guarantee” as a free tier or assume uninstalling an app prevents a trial charge. Record any conversion date, payment authorization and cancellation instructions before activating a trial.
Read the refund guide for the conditions attached to the three paid providers covered on this site. Purchase channel matters: an app-store transaction may follow a different refund route from the provider’s website.
How to assess the business model
Look for a clear operator, a readable privacy policy and an explanation of what data is collected and why. Check whether the product is funded by paid customers, advertising or another stated mechanism. A product’s price alone cannot settle that question.
Treat “no logs” as a claim that needs definition. Which records does the policy discuss? Does it distinguish activity data from account, billing or operational information? If an audit or assessment is cited, identify its scope and date instead of treating the word “audited” as permanent certification of every future app release.
We do not publish unverified claims of independent audits or logging behavior for these providers. Our comparison method separates documented features from independently tested results, and states clearly which evidence this site currently has.
What a paid plan may add
A paid plan may provide more locations, connection allowance, routing controls, support or other services. Confirm the actual selected plan and platform; a feature shown on a provider’s website may belong to another bundle or operating system.
Among the three selected paid providers here, NordVPN lists 10 simultaneous connections, while Surfshark and PIA list unlimited connections. Their split-tunneling controls differ by platform. Those are specific documented distinctions, not evidence that paying automatically makes every connection faster or more private.
Some bundles add services beyond the VPN. Assess whether you would use them and compare their recurring costs. The largest bundle is not automatically the best value for a buyer who needs only a VPN route for a small number of devices.
When a free plan may be enough
A free tier may suit limited, occasional use when its documented limits match your devices and activities and its business model is acceptable to you. It can also let you examine a provider’s app before deciding whether an upgrade solves a real need, subject to what that free tier actually includes.
A paid plan may be more relevant when you need a specific location, larger allowance or routing feature not available in the free tier. Do not buy a multi-year offer purely because its equivalent rate looks low: compare the full payment with the period you expect to use.
Make the decision from your requirements
Write down the devices, intended routing, expected period of use and acceptable cost. Then compare a suitable free tier, a genuine monthly subscription and a longer paid term. The cost guide helps calculate the payment and renewal difference, while the paid shortlist compares three selected providers by documented fit.
Neither a free badge nor a discount countdown should substitute for knowing which traffic is covered, which settings exist and what you are agreeing to pay.
