IKEv2. In the meantime, there are ways to fix the problem that was uncovered at the time – if the VPN provider implemented it in a secure manner, there is nothing wrong with IKEv2.
L2TP / IPsec
The L2TP / IPsec protocol consists of two components: L2TP establishes the connection, IPsec provides the encryption. Since the protocol has been implemented in almost every modern operating system, many VPN providers support
it. However, L2TP / IPsec is relatively slow and the NSA is highly likely to have cracked the protocol. It is also poorly equipped to bypass firewalls. The use of this VPN protocol is currently no longer
recommended. It is only suitable as an alternative solution if a stable connection cannot be established with more secure protocols.
PPTP can be classified as historical. At the turn of the millennium, it was the first widespread VPN protocol. Today it is considered outdated due to its weak encryption and many security gaps. However, it is highly
compatible and very fast thanks to the low security standards. This makes it attractive for users who use a VPN primarily
to circumvent geoblocking for video and audio streaming services.
