Yes, Surfshark has a free trial: 7 days for $0.00, through its website only, on the 12- and 24-month plans of Starter, One and One+. You still have to enter payment details, and unless you turn off auto-renewal before day 7, Surfshark charges the full first bill. For the 27-month Starter or One plan, that’s $67.23 plus tax. There’s no free plan beyond the trial. These terms come from Surfshark’s trial page and support article, checked 13 October 2026.

How the Surfshark free trial works

Surfshark’s support article says: “Currently, the free trial for new users is available through Surfshark’s website for 12- and 24-month plans purchased with PayPal, Apple Pay, or a credit card.” In detail:

  • Length: 7 days, starting at $0.00.
  • Plans: Starter, One or One+, on the 12-month term (15 months with its 3 extra) or the 24-month term (27 months). The 1-month plans have no trial.
  • Payment details: an email address and a card, PayPal or Apple Pay are required at the start. The article’s introduction allows Apple Pay, but its steps name only PayPal or a card.
  • Devices: up to 3 during the trial, instead of the unlimited simultaneous devices a paid plan allows.
  • Account limits: Surfshark’s terms of service say a trial account can’t change its email or two-factor authentication settings.

What you’re charged when the trial ends

When the 7 days are up, the trial converts into the plan you selected. In trial mode, Surfshark’s pricing grid states: “Today you will pay $0.00. After the free trial, you will be charged $67.23 for a 27-month subscription (plus tax).”

The amount depends on the plan and term. The trial-mode grid we checked showed the default prices; the test-group prices come from Surfshark’s regular grid and weren’t checked in trial mode:

  • Starter or One, 24 months + 3: $67.23 for 27 months, in every price group checked.
  • One+, 24 months + 3: $121.23 at the default price, or $107.73 in one of Surfshark’s test groups.
  • Starter or One, 12 months + 3: $50.85 for 15 months at the default price, or $44.85 in the test groups.
  • One+, 12 months + 3: $112.35 at the default price, or $104.85 in the test groups.

After that first term, each plan renews every 12 months at $79.00 (Starter), $99.00 (One) or $119.00 (One+), before tax. Tax comes on top: a New York checkout on 13 October 2026 added 8.875% sales tax, $5.97 on a $67.23 bill. Our Surfshark price guide explains the price test and every term.

How to cancel the Surfshark free trial before day 7

To avoid the charge, turn off auto-renewal before day 7. Surfshark describes these steps:

  1. Log in to your Surfshark account on the website.
  2. Select the profile icon, then open Subscription.
  3. Disable auto-renewal. Surfshark’s cancellation guide shows the same control under Subscription → Payments → Cancel auto-renewal.

The sources we checked don’t give a cut-off hour on day 7, so don’t leave it to the last day. Check that auto-renewal shows as off before you close the page.

The trial page’s FAQ also mentions canceling in “your mobile app store settings”, although the support article says the trial runs through the website. If you started the trial on the website, your website account is where auto-renewal is turned off.

After the trial: the 30-day money-back guarantee

Surfshark says its 30-day money-back guarantee starts when the trial converts into a paid plan, “giving you a total of 37 days to test Surfshark risk-free”. That is Surfshark’s figure: 7 trial days plus 30 refund days. You request the refund through Surfshark’s live chat, and the policy has conditions:

  • It covers the initial purchase only, with one refund per service. Renewal payments are excluded.
  • Prepaid and gift-card payments, the anonymous dedicated IP and paid Alternative ID services are non-refundable.
  • Turning off auto-renewal doesn’t request a refund; it only stops the next charge.

Our guide to canceling Surfshark and getting a refund covers the full process.

Is Surfshark free?

No. Surfshark’s trial FAQ says: “Surfshark isn’t a fully free service, but it offers a 7-day free trial.” We found no free plan in its lineup: Starter, One and One+ are all paid once the trial ends. If you’re weighing a free VPN instead, our free vs paid VPN guide explains what free plans usually limit.

App-store trials: not verified

Surfshark’s current support article says the trial “is available through Surfshark’s website”. We found no current official source documenting a Surfshark trial through Google Play, the App Store or the Mac App Store, so we can’t confirm one exists. Surfshark’s refund policy sends Apple and Amazon purchases to those platforms, and Google Play refunds depend on timing, so read the store’s terms before starting anything there.

Trial or paid offer: which route to take

We link to both routes through our affiliate links. The trial button opens Surfshark’s free-trial page. The main offer link opens Surfshark’s regular paid offer instead: you pay the first bill at checkout, $67.23 for 27 months of Starter or One before tax, and the 30-day money-back guarantee runs from that purchase. Both links apply Surfshark’s affiliate coupon automatically, so there’s no code to type.

  • Take the trial if you want to pay nothing today and 3 devices are enough for a week: start it on Surfshark’s free-trial page (affiliate link).
  • Buy through the offer if you already expect to keep Surfshark or want unlimited devices from the first day. You still have 30 days to ask for a refund.

Surfshark Starter: $67.23 today for 27 months, then $79.00 every year.

Common questions

Is the Surfshark free trial really free?

It costs $0.00 for 7 days, but it comes with a commitment: you enter payment details, and the first bill is charged automatically unless you turn off auto-renewal before day 7. For the 27-month Starter or One plan, that charge is $67.23 plus tax.

Can I get the free trial on a monthly plan?

No. The trial covers only the 12- and 24-month plans, which run 15 and 27 months with their extra months. Surfshark’s 1-month plans have no trial.

How many devices can I use during the trial?

Up to 3. A paid plan allows unlimited simultaneous devices, so testing on more than 3 devices at once means buying and relying on the 30-day guarantee instead.

Can I get a refund after the trial converts?

Yes, if the purchase is eligible. Surfshark’s 30-day money-back guarantee starts when the trial converts, and you request the refund through live chat. It applies to the first purchase only, not to later renewals.
