Canceling Surfshark and getting money back are two separate actions. To cancel, turn off auto-renewal on Surfshark’s website: sign in, open Subscription, go to Payments and select Cancel auto-renewal. That stops the next charge, and you keep the VPN until the paid term ends, but it refunds nothing. To get money back, request a refund through Surfshark’s live chat within 30 days of an eligible first purchase. Surfshark’s stated policy excludes renewal payments.
This guide follows Surfshark’s refund article (edited 27 March 2026), its cancellation guide (edited 11 September 2026) and its terms of service (last updated 13 July 2026), all checked on 13 October 2026. It summarizes those policies; it can’t approve a refund or see your account.
Cancel, refund or both?
- You want to keep Surfshark until the term ends but not pay again: cancel auto-renewal. Nothing else is needed.
- You bought in the last 30 days and want your money back: request a refund. Surfshark’s cancellation guide says canceling doesn’t trigger a refund, so don’t treat one action as the other.
- A renewal charge just went through: the 30-day guarantee doesn’t cover recurring payments under Surfshark’s policy. The questions at the end explain what that means.
Deleting the app does neither. The subscription belongs to your Surfshark account, or to the app store that billed you, not to a device.
How to cancel Surfshark auto-renewal on the website
These steps come from Surfshark’s cancellation guide for subscriptions bought on its website:
- Sign in to your Surfshark account on Surfshark’s website.
- Open Subscription. Surfshark’s free-trial instructions reach it through the profile icon.
- Go to Payments.
- Select Cancel auto-renewal.
Save a dated screenshot of the page afterward as your record. According to the guide, access continues until the end of the period you’ve already paid for, and no refund is issued automatically. If the labels in your account differ, follow the current guide.
Here’s the charge you’re stopping. Surfshark’s renewal table lists, before tax, $79.00 every 12 months for Starter, $99.00 for One and $119.00 for One+ once the first term ends. Monthly plans renew each month at the plan price. Surfshark’s billing page says plans “renew automatically at the full price” and that it emails a reminder 30 days before a renewal, except on 1-month plans.
What Surfshark’s 30-day guarantee covers
Surfshark offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on the initial purchase. Its refund article and terms of service set limits:
- One refund per service. If Surfshark has already refunded you for a service, the policy doesn’t cover a second refund for it.
- No refunds on recurring payments. Renewals fall outside the guarantee.
- Some purchases aren’t refundable. Surfshark’s examples include payments made with prepaid or gift cards, the anonymous Dedicated IP option and paid Alternative ID services.
To ask for a refund, contact Surfshark through live chat before the 30 days run out, with your account email and order details ready. The window starts at purchase, or when a free trial converts into a paid plan.
This is a summary of the policy, not a promise that a request will be approved. Surfshark’s terms also say the mandatory consumer law of your country still applies, which may give you rights this page can’t assess.
Where you bought decides where the refund goes
The guarantee is Surfshark’s, but the route depends on who took your payment:
- Surfshark’s website, or a billing partner named in its refund article (the article lists Paddle and Cleverbridge): request the refund through Surfshark’s live chat.
- Apple’s App Store or Amazon: Surfshark’s policy sends these refunds to Apple or Amazon, under their own processes.
- Google Play: Surfshark’s refund article sets a separate timing rule built around a 48-hour window. Read that section to see which route applies to your order.
The cancellation steps above are for website subscriptions. If an app store billed you, check that store’s subscription settings as well, and keep its receipt.
Canceling during the 7-day free trial
Surfshark’s free trial lasts 7 days and runs through its website, on 12-month and 24-month plans; 1-month plans have none. The trial costs $0.00 to start, but it needs payment details and covers up to 3 devices. If you do nothing, the plan bills when the trial ends. For Starter on the 24-month term, Surfshark’s pricing page says: “After the free trial, you will be charged $67.23 for a 27-month subscription (plus tax).”
To avoid that charge, turn off auto-renewal under Subscription in your website account before day 7. The trial page’s FAQ also mentions “your mobile app store settings”, but Surfshark’s support article describes the trial as a website offer, so start with the website account. During a trial, Surfshark’s terms say you can’t change the account’s email or two-factor settings.
If the trial converts and you change your mind, the 30-day guarantee starts then, which Surfshark says gives you “a total of 37 days”. Refunds after a trial also go through live chat. The Surfshark free trial guide covers eligibility in more detail.
Records to keep
- The order confirmation: date, plan, term, amount, tax and who billed you (Surfshark’s website, a billing partner or an app store).
- A dated screenshot showing auto-renewal is off.
- The live chat transcript, or at least the date, time and what support agreed to.
- Your deadline: the purchase date, or the date the trial converted, plus 30 days.
- Surfshark’s renewal reminder email, if one arrives.
The VPN refunds guide compares these rules with NordVPN’s and PIA’s.
If you haven’t bought yet
The renewal and refund rules are part of the price. Surfshark Starter costs $67.23 paid upfront for the first 27 months ($67.23 ÷ 27 = $2.49 a month equivalent), then $79.00 a year before tax unless you cancel. The Surfshark price guide lays out every plan and term, and the Surfshark review explains the documented features behind them.
Surfshark Starter: $67.23 today for 27 months, then $79.00 every year.

Common questions
Does canceling Surfshark give me a refund?
No. Canceling auto-renewal only stops the next charge, and you keep access until the paid term ends. A refund is a separate live-chat request, available within 30 days of an eligible first purchase.
Can I get a refund after Surfshark auto-renews?
Not under the 30-day guarantee, which excludes recurring payments. Surfshark’s terms keep your country’s mandatory consumer law in force, so ask support if you believe a local rule applies. To avoid the next renewal, cancel before its date; Surfshark says it emails a reminder 30 days ahead on plans longer than a month.
Will deleting the Surfshark app cancel my subscription?
No. The subscription sits with your Surfshark account, or with the app store that billed you, not with the app on your device. Use the website steps above or the store’s subscription settings.
How long can I use Surfshark after canceling?
Until the end of the term you’ve already paid for, according to Surfshark’s cancellation guide. Canceling only stops the next automatic payment.
Can I get a second refund from Surfshark?
Don’t count on it. Surfshark limits refunds to one per service, so the guarantee doesn’t cover another refund for a service you’ve already had refunded.
