Every NordVPN plan (Basic, Complete and Prime) allows 10 simultaneous connections per account. NordVPN’s terms say: “NordVPN as VPN Service allows a maximum of ten simultaneous connections per Account. That includes proxy connections, and each of them counts as a separate slot.” The limit counts devices connected at the same moment, not devices with the app installed. A router running NordVPN uses one slot and covers every device connected to it.
Installed devices versus active connections
The limit is on sessions, not installations. NordVPN’s advice for an account at the limit, covered below, is to disconnect a device, not to uninstall the app. Its privacy notice explains how it enforces the cap: it keeps “the last session information,” which “is used to limit the amount of concurrent active user sessions and is automatically deleted within 15 minutes after a session is terminated.”
For a household, count the devices that stay connected at the same time across everyone using the account, not the devices you own. Two people who each keep a phone, a laptop and a tablet connected use six slots. Put the TV and a games console behind a router running NordVPN, and the total becomes seven.
What uses a slot
| Connection | Slots used | NordVPN’s rule |
|---|---|---|
| A device connected through a NordVPN app | 1 | Ten simultaneous connections per account |
| A proxy connection | 1 each | Each proxy connection “counts as a separate slot” |
| A router running NordVPN, with devices behind it | 1 | “The router uses only one device slot” |
| A dedicated IP connection | 1, within the same 10 | Several dedicated IPs allowed, but “ten simultaneous connections overall” |
| Meshnet | Its own limit | Up to 10 of your devices and 50 external devices |
Three smaller rules come from NordVPN’s documentation:
- Same server, different protocols. Devices on the same server must use different connection methods. The device article says “a total of five devices can be connected to one server at the same time: through HTTP proxy, SOCKS5, NordLynx, NordWhisper, OpenVPN TCP, and OpenVPN UDP,” which lists six methods, so the exact number is unclear. Connecting to a different server avoids the question.
- One installation, one user at a time. Several user accounts on the same computer can’t use the app simultaneously.
- Browser extensions. NordVPN describes its Chrome, Firefox and Edge extensions as proxy extensions, and its terms count each proxy connection separately. Running the extension alongside the desktop app may therefore use two slots on one computer.
What happens when you reach the limit
When you hit it, NordVPN’s support article on the “Session Limit Reached” error advises: “Wait 10 minutes before the next connection. If you’re connected on 10 devices, first disconnect one of them and wait 10 minutes.” A disconnected device doesn’t free its slot immediately, so moving the connection from one device to another may take a 10-minute wait. Every plan has the same cap, so upgrading to Complete or Prime doesn’t raise it.
A router covers more devices with one slot
NordVPN’s device article says: “The router uses only one device slot, but the VPN will protect all the devices connected to the network.” That’s a documented way to put more than 10 devices behind one subscription, and it also covers devices that can’t run a NordVPN app. NordVPN’s support lists Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Chromecast, Raspberry Pi and Chromebook among the “other devices” it can be used with; consoles and similar devices may need a router or another manual setup.
Router support isn’t universal. NordVPN says “most routers can be manually set up with NordVPN,” notes that you can also buy routers with the VPN software pre-installed, and keeps a list of routers it doesn’t support. Check your exact model and firmware first; our VPN router guide lists what to confirm.
Supported devices and platforms
NordVPN lists apps for:
- Windows 10 (64-bit) and Windows 11
- macOS 14 Sonoma or later, in two versions (Mac App Store and website download) whose features differ
- Linux, with graphical and command-line apps: .deb and .rpm packages for Debian 12, Ubuntu 22.04, Linux Mint 21 and Fedora 43 or newer, plus Raspberry Pi OS and a Snap package
- Android and iPhone and iPad
- Android TV, Fire TV and Apple TV, with a native tvOS app since 18 December 2023
- Browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox and Edge
Each connected device counts toward the same 10, whatever the platform. Features differ between them: app split tunneling, kill switch options and the full malware protection all depend on the operating system, so check the devices you’ll actually use. Our NordVPN plans comparison shows what each plan adds.
Can you share NordVPN with your household?
NordVPN’s terms set the limit per account. The sources we checked for this page don’t include a NordVPN rule on sharing an account with family members or other people, so we can’t say it’s allowed or forbidden; read NordVPN’s Terms of Service before you share a login. If you do share, every connected device in the household draws from the same 10.
When Surfshark or PIA fits better
If more than 10 devices regularly need their own VPN connection at the same time, and a router isn’t practical, NordVPN’s limit becomes a real constraint. Surfshark and Private Internet Access (PIA) both document unlimited simultaneous connections, subject to their own account terms. Their selected plans also cost less upfront. All figures are USD quotes before tax, checked on 13 October 2026:
| Provider and plan | Upfront bill | Monthly equivalent | Quoted renewal |
|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN Basic | $94.23 for 27 months | $3.49 ($94.23 ÷ 27) | $139.08 for 12 months |
| Surfshark Starter | $67.23 for 27 months | $2.49 ($67.23 ÷ 27) | $79 for 12 months |
| PIA | $46.54 for 26 months | $1.79 ($46.54 ÷ 26) | Renews yearly; amount not shown on the deal page |
NordVPN still fits if 10 simultaneous connections cover your household, or a router can absorb the rest. It also documents a Windows App Kill Switch that closes selected programs. Our NordVPN vs Surfshark comparison weighs device limits, Mac and iPhone routing and the bill side by side, and our PIA review covers its desktop controls.
NordVPN Basic: $94.23 today for 27 months, then $139.08 every year.

Common questions
How many devices can use NordVPN at the same time?
Ten. NordVPN’s terms allow 10 simultaneous connections per account on Basic, Complete and Prime alike. Each proxy connection takes its own slot, and a router running NordVPN counts as one.
Do Complete or Prime allow more devices than Basic?
No. NordVPN’s pricing grid lists “10 devices secured at once” for all three plans. Complete and Prime add other services, not connections.
Does a router count as one device on NordVPN?
Yes. NordVPN says the router uses one device slot while the VPN protects every device connected to that network. Check that your router model is supported first.
What does “Session Limit Reached” mean on NordVPN?
NordVPN’s support article says it appears when you reach the device limit or start too many connections. Its advice is to wait 10 minutes and, if 10 devices are connected, to disconnect one first.
