Our assessment
NordVPN is a good fit for someone who needs a paid VPN across common desktop, mobile and TV devices and will stay within 10 simultaneous connections. Its documentation is strongest on Windows, where the Internet Kill Switch blocks connectivity and the App Kill Switch closes selected programs. Its trust record is also well documented: six no-logs assurance engagements by PwC and Deloitte, repeated Cure53 security assessments and a public account of a 2018 server breach.
The main qualifications are the cost after the first term and platform coverage. Basic renews at $139.08 a year after a first payment of $94.23 for 27 months. Mac and iPhone have no documented app split tunneling, NordVPN’s two Mac apps use different kill-switch designs, and port forwarding now requires a paid add-on. If one of those features is the reason you are buying, check your platform first.
This review assesses NordVPN’s documentation, prices and policies, checked on 13 October 2026. We have not performed speed, leak, streaming or hands-on usability tests for this site, so we do not rank NordVPN’s speed, promise streaming access or report leak results.

NordVPN’s US grid has three plans, each on 2-year (plus 3 extra months), 1-year and 1-month terms. Every plan covers 10 devices at once. Prices are USD before tax:
| Plan | First 27 months | Monthly equivalent | Then each year | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $94.23 | $3.49 | $139.08 | VPN, scam and phishing protection, Dark Web Monitor for 5 emails |
| Complete | $121.23 | $4.49 | $219.48 | Basic plus next-gen antivirus, ad and tracker blocker, NordPass, 1 TB NordLocker storage, Dark Web Monitor Pro |
| Prime | $202.23 | $7.49 | $296.28 | Complete plus Coveron identity services for US residents |
The 1-year plans cost $65.88, $77.88 and $113.88 and renew at the same yearly prices; the 1-month plans are $14.99, $19.99 and $29.99. NordVPN sells no 3-year or lifetime plan. The NordVPN plans comparison explains what each bundle includes.
The renewal is the number to plan around. Basic’s first term works out to $3.49 a month ($94.23 ÷ 27), but its renewal of $139.08 a year averages $11.59 a month. Keeping it through one renewal costs $94.23 + $139.08 = $233.31 for 39 months. NordVPN’s US renewal table, last updated on 10 June 2026, says renewal prices may be subject to testing, so read the renewal line at checkout. The NordVPN price guide breaks the cost down further.
Devices and apps
NordVPN allows a maximum of 10 simultaneous connections per account on every plan, and its terms count each proxy connection as a separate slot. A router uses one slot but protects every device connected to it. If you hit the limit, NordVPN’s support says to disconnect a device and wait 10 minutes. More in how many devices NordVPN allows.
Apps are listed for Windows 10 (64-bit) and 11, macOS 14 or later, Linux, Android, iPhone and iPad, Android TV, Fire TV and Apple TV, which has had a native app since December 2023. Linux has had a graphical app alongside the command-line version since May 2025. The Mac app comes in two versions, App Store and direct download, with different features. The Chrome, Firefox and Edge extensions are proxy add-ons that cover browser traffic, not every program on the device.
NordVPN says most routers can be set up manually. Our router guide explains why a router with a VPN-server feature does not necessarily support NordVPN as a client.
Split tunneling is not identical across platforms
Current NordVPN documentation describes app-based splitting on Windows, Android and Android TV, plus website exclusions in its browser extensions. Linux instead has an Allowlist for ports and subnets. Matching Linux traffic bypasses both the VPN and the kill switch; that is a routing exception, not an extra layer of protection.
Mac and iOS app splitting are not listed in the current platform coverage. If your Mac needs one app on a direct connection, look at Surfshark’s supported Mac Bypasser or PIA’s desktop rules. On iOS, Surfshark’s documented exclusion feature applies to websites rather than whole apps.
NordVPN also warns about interactions between exclusions and protection. Excluded apps can still use NordVPN’s DNS servers, and the Internet Kill Switch may block excluded traffic even while the VPN is connected. Do not assume that ticking “exclude” makes a program behave exactly as it did before the VPN was installed.
Kill-switch behavior needs the right app
The Windows App Kill Switch closes chosen programs and is off by default. The Internet Kill Switch controls connectivity instead. Closing a browser or file-transfer app can be disruptive, while blocking the network leaves it open but unable to communicate.
On iOS and the Mac App Store version, NordVPN’s current guide calls the routing-level safeguard VPN bypass prevention. The website Mac version instead documents an app kill switch. Android 8 and later use system-wide protection, and Fire TV Stick lacks a kill switch in the cited platform guide. Linux blocks traffic after a drop or manual disconnect, subject to its Allowlist exceptions.
Read what a VPN kill switch does before depending on one: a feature name does not establish what happens after a manual disconnect, app exit or reboot, and we have not tested those events.
What changed in 2025 and 2026
P2P on standard servers. An April 2026 support article says NordVPN removed the separate P2P server section from its apps (from version 8.0.0 on Windows, 10.0.0 on macOS and 9.0.0 on iOS and Android) and that all standard servers now support P2P traffic. It does not mention Linux, older apps or router setups. NordVPN tells users to respect local and copyright laws; you are responsible for that. More in the NordVPN torrenting guide.
Port forwarding needs a Dedicated Server. Standard servers and Dedicated IP do not support port forwarding. Since April 2026 it has been available only with the paid Dedicated Server add-on, a virtual server with dedicated resources and a static IP address, offered in Paris, Berlin, London, Phoenix and Boston. The macOS App Store version currently cannot use it; an older NordVPN article still says it offers none.
Threat Protection has new names. What NordVPN called Threat Protection Pro is now “Scam, phishing, and malware protection,” marketed as a next-gen antivirus, and the old Threat Protection is now “Scam and phishing protection.” The full version scans downloads and blocks malicious sites even without a VPN connection, but only on 64-bit Windows 10 and 11 and the directly downloaded Mac app; it comes with Complete and Prime. Basic includes the DNS-based scam and phishing protection, which blocks ads, trackers and unsafe domains. Old names may still appear in the apps during the rollout.
Meshnet stays. NordVPN announced in August 2025 that Meshnet would shut down on 1 December 2025, then reversed that decision in September 2025. Its Meshnet page now calls the feature open source and free for anyone, with or without a subscription, on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, for up to 10 of your own devices and 50 external ones. No dated announcement of the open-source release was found. Meshnet does not work with post-quantum encryption or NordWhisper.
NordWhisper. Launched in January 2025 for restricted networks, NordWhisper uses web tunnel technology. NordVPN lists it for Windows, Android, Linux, iOS and macOS, but not with Dedicated IP, Meshnet or Onion Over VPN servers. A May 2026 support article says NordVPN is moving its obfuscated servers from OpenVPN to NordWhisper; on Linux, those servers still work only with OpenVPN.
Trust record: audits, the 2018 breach and jurisdiction
NordVPN’s terms name nordvpn S.A., a Panama company, as the provider, and NordVPN says its parent, Nord Security, is headquartered in Lithuania. Panama law governs the terms, although some countries, including EU members, require local consumer law to apply. Payments from US residents may be handled by a separate company, Lagosec, Inc., which may explain an unfamiliar name on a bank statement.
NordVPN’s terms say user activity is not “monitored, recorded, logged, stored, or passed to any third party,” and its privacy notice says it does not store traffic logs, IP addresses or browsing information. It does keep last-session details to enforce the device limit, deleting them within 15 minutes after a session ends, and records whether you used the service in the last 90 days. A Dedicated IP, Dedicated Server or Smart DNS links your IP address or activity more closely to your account.
NordVPN has commissioned six no-logs assurance engagements: PwC in 2018 and 2020, then Deloitte every year from 2022 to 2025. The latest ran from 10 November to 12 December 2025, and NordVPN reports that Deloitte found its systems designed and implemented in line with its no-logs statement. Each engagement is a point-in-time check, and the reports are available only to logged-in customers, so we have not read them. Some NordVPN pages still give lower counts. Separately, Cure53 assessed NordVPN’s apps in 2022, 2024 and 2025, and its servers and infrastructure in 2022 and 2025; NordVPN reports no critical vulnerabilities in 2025 and says the high-severity issues were fixed and verified. A HackerOne bug bounty has run since December 2019.
In March 2018, an attacker got into one rented NordVPN server in Finland through an insecure remote-management account that the data center had added without NordVPN’s knowledge. NordVPN learned of it in April 2019 and disclosed it in October 2019, saying it had first wanted to be sure the attack could not be repeated elsewhere. The attacker obtained expired TLS keys; NordVPN says no user activity logs, identities or credentials were exposed. Those statements are NordVPN’s own, and TechCrunch reported the breach after NordVPN confirmed it.
NordVPN says it has since moved to RAM-only servers: its Trust Center states that all server data is held in memory and wiped when a server powers off. Not every server is colocated: NordVPN says it owns and manages a large share, alongside partner-hosted ones. In January 2026, NordVPN denied claims that its Salesforce development servers had been breached, saying the leaked files came from a third-party platform it had briefly trialed; that is NordVPN’s own account. The guide to whether NordVPN is safe goes deeper.
Customer support
NordVPN offers 24/7 support through live chat and email, but no phone support. Chat starts with an AI chatbot that hands you to a human agent if it cannot solve the problem; NordVPN calls chat the fastest route. Email goes through a form or support@nordvpn.com, with no stated response time.
Cancellation and refund terms
For a website subscription, NordVPN’s guide places auto-renewal cancellation in Nord Account’s Billing area. Paid access continues through the existing term. Requesting a refund is separate and requires the applicable support procedure.
The ordinary 30-day guarantee applies to an eligible initial purchase, not renewals. The provider’s terms include qualifications for purchase channels, repeat refunds and some local-law situations. App-store or retailer transactions can require that seller’s process.
Reasons to choose another provider
- Choose Surfshark for unlimited simultaneous connections, its documented Mac Bypasser or a lower bill: Starter costs $67.23 for 27 months and renews at $79.00 a year, against NordVPN Basic’s $94.23 and $139.08.
- Examine PIA if Linux or Mac desktop app rules, Windows and Linux DNS controls or unlimited connections matter more than NordVPN’s app coverage. Its current deal is $46.54 for 26 months, but the deal page does not show the renewal amount.
- Look elsewhere if you need port forwarding without paying for a Dedicated Server; PIA documents port forwarding in supported locations.
- Choose a shorter term if you are unsure you will use a VPN for most of 27 months. NordVPN’s 1-month Basic plan is $14.99.
The best VPN guide keeps the decision focused on these documented differences.
Common questions
Is NordVPN good?
On its documentation, yes, for buyers who stay within 10 simultaneous connections and whose platforms support the controls they need. Windows gets the fullest feature set, while Mac and iPhone lack app split tunneling. We have not tested speed or streaming, so judge those on your own devices within the 30-day guarantee.
Is NordVPN safe to use?
NordVPN has commissioned six no-logs assurance engagements, the latest by Deloitte in late 2025, and repeated Cure53 security assessments. One rented server was breached in 2018, which NordVPN disclosed in 2019. These are point-in-time checks, not a permanent guarantee.
Does NordVPN allow torrenting?
NordVPN says all standard servers in its current apps support P2P traffic, and that users must follow local and copyright laws. Port forwarding is not available on standard servers; it requires the paid Dedicated Server add-on.
How much does NordVPN cost after the first term?
Basic renews at $139.08 a year, Complete at $219.48 and Prime at $296.28, before tax. Turning off auto-renewal in Nord Account before the first term ends stops that charge, and you keep access until the paid period ends.
